This is my first purchase of bluetooth headphones. I don’t travel so any requirement for portability is, right now, irrelevant to me, I just wanted a set of over ear noise cancelling headphones to play music and help focus my mind from distractions drowning out nuisance noise such as building works.

Like other reviewers I got swept up with a plethora of reviews via a certain video sharing platform and based on those reviews I had it in my mind that I would go for the main competitor to Bose, however I had a nagging feeling all was not right and when I saw these QC 45s reduced to £209.00 I decided to take the plunge, yes money talks.

Whilst I can not say with any degree of authority that these are better or worse than the rival option all I can say is I am very please with this pair of QC 45s. As a test I trialled them outside, noise cancellation active and playing various soft rock at 60% volume on a busy A road during the school run with a with a 3200rpm polishing machine running and I could barely hear the machine, in fact I think I could hear the vibration through my body rather than the machine, I couldn’t hear the sound of the car door close or passing buses intrude into the music. Higher frequency noise such as loud voices (screaming children) managed to just sneak through. I tested again sitting in front of the TV, BBC News with the TV volume at number 32 which produces an average of 56bd and a max of 78bd depending on who is speaking, headphone volume at 50% playing Freddie Hubbard’s Blue Spirits and I can not hear lower pitch voices intruding into the music however the high pitch voices again just sneak through but if I was busy rather than focusing on the tv then I doubt I would have noticed. I think that is pretty impressive.

The Bose connect app is basic but works, both phone and tablet connected with ease. Range of the Bluetooth seems ok with me leaving the active device in the front room and walking upstairs to the back of the house where the music just started to blip out for a fraction of a second. Whilst the sound quality is flat out of the box the EQ setting via the Bose Music app does the trick and I have no issue with adjusting the EQ to my preference, what is the point of having an app that allows you to adjust the bass, middle and treble to your preference and then moan about the sound quality of the out of the box preset. Manufactures wouldn’t give you the option if they didn’t want you to adjust the EQ.

I can not provide details on battery life as I have not used them extensively enough, but I am sure it will do me fine.

I like the physical buttons on the headshells, they are basic and do what I want.

Inactive time out can be set by the app so you don’t drain the battery should you forget to use the physical power off button.

The sliding power button also acts as a notification button, once on just slide the button to on again (sprung sliding button) and it I’ll tell you what device you are connected to and % battery remaining.

If you are reading this review then you are likely in the market for a set of noise cancelling headphones, I am not going to recommend you buy these, you have to go with what you believe will suit your needs best, that said I have no regrets with my purchase.

Best sound quality. Though slightly heavy and tight.

Super sturdy, excellent built quality. Not great for those who loves loud music. Max sound Upto 22-23db. Quite mode and aware mode works great. I was expecting more from the BOSE…

I purchased this specifically to use on long flights and for that purpose it works very well. The noise canceling is very good at eliminating outside noise. These have an “aware mode” which allows you to hear outside noise while you have them on but, you have to click it manually (which to be clear is not that big of a deal for me but some other headphones can do so automatically when it detects you speaking)
My one dislike would be that it does not automatically pause whatever you’re listening to automatically when you remove the headphones, which is a feature I’ve found common from others, especially at this price point.
Sound is decent, they are bose so you should expect clean, crisp and quality sound. My personal preference is bass heavy sound for my headphones, while these do have some pep to them, it is not even comparable to my Sony xm4.
Overall I really love how comfortable these are, I’ve always disliked over ear headphones as they would often (and quickly) get uncomfortable on your ears/head. I’ve been pleasantly surprised to have worn these for 10 + hour flights non stop and I’ve never felt any discomfort.
Battery life is amazing, do these even die on standby? The headphones tell you how much charge is left every time you put them on. As I mentioned before, I’ve worn these on 10+ hour flights and they’ve lasted throughout the entire trip with constant noise canceling active. When not in use, I feel like this battery does not even deplete at all.
These headphones come with a wired option as well as Bluetooth. I personally never had to use the wired since i’ve never had them die on me.
The case it comes in is really nice. This is usually one of the things I would ditch but I’ve found myself using them all the time. It is a hard cover case and provides some nice protection for your headphones. I always store them in there now whenever I’m not using it.

    Bottom line?

    Pros
    VERY comfortable
Long battery life with quick charging
    Excellent Noise canceling
Can use with wire or Bluetooth

    Cons
Does not automatically pause music when you take them off.
Does not have a feature to disable noise canceling when it detects you talking

Final thoughts: Every review on here regarding sound quality would be subjective to the user as everyone has different preferences, with that said here is my opinion.
They can get nice and loud but I’ve found them to be very trebble heavy even when you adjust the settings in app to lower it. My personal preference is bass heavy music and these do not give me that crisp boom that I crave when listening even when bass boost is selected on the eq in-app.
Overall sound quality is fairly balanced with highs being more dominant. I use them all the time but really wish I could squeeze more bass out of them.

Totalmente recomendados.

I was looking to buy QC headphones for a long time. Finally took courage to try my hands on QC45 and XM5. Both had offers running and XM5 had more discount over QC45. I went to near by croma store to compare both units.

    Noise cancellation:
Croma had a very big closed indoor space with many people around during festival time, lots of devices playing in the background. Good environment to check the noise cancellation. I liked QC45 among the two. Off/On the NC we can clearly make out the difference.

    Comfort:
Easy, relaxed, no irritation on ears, cups sat nicely over my ears with QC45. Cups are made of synthetic though it didn’t make a diff for me. XM5 are big pushy on the ears and my ears touched the inside sound drivers literally.

    Ergonomics:
You can’t go wrong the QC45 cup controls. Works 100% everytime. Thanks to the old gen physical buttons. Otherside xm5 needs time to get used to touch controls. Need trial and error attempts before you master the controls.

    Sound:
QC45 audio quality sounds realistic. XM5 comes with more punch and amplified base which I felt heavy on my ears.

    App:
Bose app is simple and clear. No nonsense. First time Setup till playback is all guided via app. I have another Sony model XB910N and had experience using their app. They provide 360 audio which is not practical enough. You need to buy those special tracks from other listed apps to experience 360 audio. Sony plays their features to create stickiness for customers. Wat you see on their products is not always yours. You need to keep spending money.

    Color and looks:
It’s always subjective. QC45 smoke white color is a gold standard. Vintage piece to own.

    Marketing strategy:
Sony and Bose are quite opposite in marketing strategy. Sony tends to attract young audiences by sharing the tech used in their products like ” 8 array mic setup to get optimal noise cancellation experience”. Even Bose does the same but they won’t advertise their intellectual property information in public for any of their products. That differentiates how well the products reach to new age audience. You will rarely find discounts for Bose products. Sony sales in the last couple of years is heavily into discounts and festive offers.

    Alternatives:
Bose 700 has all the bells and whistles to compete with XM5 for an extra money. But QC45 is classic. End of the day we are buying these headphones for the Audio experience and not for complex smart features on it.

I suggest to try the models you like before making purchase decision. Don’t go by discounts and brand names. I also followed the reviews on http://www.rtings.com before making this choice.

Thanks for reading through my purchase experience. Happy shopping and enjoy 🙂👍

I realize the QC45s have some slight shortcomings in certain areas but their strengths are why I chose them. I have watched so many reviews on the top N/C headphones it irritates my wife, but here is what you can learn from my OCD (hopefully). First the competition and why I didn’t select these.
Airpod Max – Cost, weight and the stupid, stupid, stupid case.
Sony XM4/XM5 – Bulky and didn’t want gesture controls (just my preference).
Bose NC700 – Didn’t like the style and band adjustment, didn’t fold up small enough and gesture control.
There are other headphones in the consumer space but these are the big players and my top 3 reasons for picking QC45s were,
    1. Space, these fold up into a small case, big, big plus. My main use will be for travel and I wanted the smallest footprint for my carryon.
    2. Noise cancelling, I tried and compared these to Sony and the NC700 at an electronic shop in an airport and I thought these were the best. This was before the XM5s, from reviews they might have a slight advantage but not significant.
    3. Comfort, all the reviews said the weight, clamping force, cabin pressure, cavity size and breathability were the best of any of the N/C top picks. Smart move by Bose to have another iteration of the QC35s, the comfort is unrivaled.
I will use these mostly for travel, I had QC15s I bought for a wedding anniversary for my wife and I when we were flying for a cruise. They served us well, even bought a Bluetooth adapter for them, still working great and gave them to a family couple. That was 10 years ago, so another anniversary seemed like a reasonable purchase. The other players have features that surpass the QC45s, better sound, more bass, more adjustments but none of these were that important to me. For me comfort was very high on the list and I just like physical buttons and the sound is very good so no complaints there.

    Update
Comfort – After almost 1 month I can confirm the comfort of these headphones. My wife’s sleep schedule is different than mine so I have been using these connected to our Apple TV while she is sleeping. 2 or more hours with no fatigue, pain or any discomfort at all. As I stated in my original review, comfort was probably my top priority and I am so happy with them.

Noise Cancelling – I give the noise cancelling 5 out of 5, absolutely amazing and no hissing or cabin pressure. Adjustable NC just isn’t that important to me, I just want it on or off. In this case it would be ambient, it would be nice to have the option to just turn NC off. Hoping a firmware will be coming to give that option but not a big deal.

Sound – EQ’d the sound in the app and I am very happy with how they sound. I’m not a bass junkie or a audiophile but I like upper scale speakers (2 Sonos 5s in my living room for example) and these headphones do not disappoint.

Battery – I haven’t measured the actual time but the claimed 24 hours seems pretty close and that is more than adequate.

    2nd Update

My adult daughter flew home for Christmas and she had replaced her Bose QC 25s that had stopped working with the Sony XM4s. So I got to spend some time with the XM4s, played with the app, listened to music, tried the noise cancelling and wore them for a while to test the comfort. I was very impressed, not surprising given the reputation of the XM4s but my personal opinion is the sound was very comparable to my Bose QC45s. I didn’t A/B switch the headphones but I have been listening to the QC45s for a couple of months now so that gave a good reference point. Noise cancelling of the XM4s was excellent, I still think the Bose have the edge but only a very slight advantage, it was cool to have the ability to turn off NC and get better battery life and still wish the Bose had this feature (still holding out hope a firmware will come to give this) but it isn’t a big disappointment for me. The comfort was again excellent, the ear cushions were super supple and gave a great seal. The Sony app had a lot more options than the Bose, if your an app nerd you could geek out on it, if your not it could seem complicated, for me I wouldn’t spend time in it so it’s not a significant advantage but that’s me. As I said in my original review adjustable NC isn’t something I would use so that feature isn’t for me but the Sony’s have it if you would like it.

Summary of the XM4s from my perspective is they are comparable to the Bose in many ways, comfort, sound, noise cancelling, case size and better in some aspects like the app and the ability to turn NC off. It comes down to personal preferences and I like physical buttons but wow if you like the features of the Sony they are a top of the line headphones and you would love them. I still would choose the Bose but it was fun playing with the Sony XM4s.

    3rd Update
There were some references to wind noise with the QC45s in comments and reviews because the 45s don’t have the ability to turn off NC (if I remember correctly). I was letting the dog out the other day and had my QC45s on and there was a mild wind. Yes you do get wind noise, so if you are going to use headphones outside consider this. I don’t see this being an issue for me, guess only when I let the dog out, yeah first world problem. I keep mentioning the firmware update that could fix this (and added battery when not needed) with some hopes that a Bose rep will take notice (might have a better chance of winning the lottery) but for now this is a narrow circumstantial issue. For me it’s the comfort that trumps the advantages that the competition has over the QC45s.

The media could not be loaded.

     Speakee Noise cancellation:
I was happy with speaker’s noise cancellation.

    Microphone noise cancellation:
Really really bad. Please have a look at my video. You can see that headphones are considering my voice as NOISE and stops it from being heard on other side. I have to SHOUT to get heard. I specifically bought these headphones to work in my office and attend calls. May be I have received faulty headphones.
I don’t know but I am going to return it and ask for replacement.

    Battery life :
I can not comment on this, because I have never fully charged the headphones and I am planning to return it. Never tested the full battery.

    Sound quality:
    Good music. Soul Soothing experience.

    Durability:
Can not comment because I haven’t used in long term.

    Ease of use:
    Definitely easy to use.

    Appearance:
Good, if u like round cut.

Well tbh I was sceptic buying this QC 45 after seeing tons of youtube reviews, yet the price of 20k was so irresistible to hold back , finally here it is I am listening to it and writing my delightful experience. Watched “The Revenant” , heard couple of songs from Skrillex to Justin Bieber to arijit singh to travis scott. This headphone is brilliant for every genre. Sound is so balanced. I had a QC 25 . Definitely bose technologies have gone far. I also have airpods pro gen1. Two things airpods pro though ahead and those are the transparency mode and call quality. But in terms of ANC and sound stage this QC 45 is amazing. I could have gone for Sony XM5 (tons of youtube videos are found actually to promote XM5) but nah this QC 45 design is the OG. Looks minimal, comfort is next level. No fancy set of features to confuse user. One suggestion to everyone, before putting negative comments please make sure you wear it right way and ensure proper sealing.

Writing this review after i faced this issue. After 10 days only the microphone suddenly stopped working during a client call. It took me sometime to believe that it happened. I tried factory reset too but it didn’t work. I have sent them for service as it was under warranty. Will keep here posted the further experience.

@Bose its quite disappointed that even after paying high for quality customers has to face such issue.

So i bought this and within a week the Bluetooth and ANC stopped working. So I contacted Bose customer care and got it replaced with a new piece . Although at the end of the day I am happy, it took more than 6 weeks for the replacement to arrive as it had to be shipped from the US. At least that’s what I was told. But I don’t have any issues with the quality of the product.
