I have a degree in journalism with a minor in photojournalism, but that was 50 years ago and I haevn’t shot professionally for a LONG time. I still have my beloved Nikkormat EL but haven’t shot with film for at least 25 years. But preparing for an Alaska cruise, I bought a Nikon D3400 for its abilty to change lenses (and the B and T exposure settings). Then I bought this lens (which cost more than the camera) to replace the 2 lenses that came with it. I knew changing lenses while shooting the astounding Alaska scenery would be a pain and risk missing shots. That was 6 years ago, and it has been the lens that stays on my camera all that time. Is it perfect? Far from it. The thing that irritates me most is the f/3.5 widest opening. Shooting in the dark is pretty much impossible without really long exposures. It does not bother me is that the sharpness won’t stand up to a big blowup, since I shoot these days for my own memories and to impress friends. This lens has done just what I wanted, a lot of flexibility for well-lit (daylight) photographs. I shot our Alaska cruise, and numerous places since the including the Grand Canyon, switching in a second from a panorama shot to an eagle flying above me. I left my bulky camera bag in the room a lot of the time; with a large SD card and a couple extra batteries strapped to the camera strap, and this lens, I could capture almost anything. I use other lenses occasionally, but this is the lens that is normally on my camera, ready to grab and go. I’m glad I bought it!

It’s great to have the ability to take landscape photos or zoom in for birding without having to switch out lenses. Mounted easily onto my adapter for the Z6. I haven’t used my 70-300mm since. Happy with this purchase

Really Disappointed with the image quality after spending a half a Lakh rupees. Nikon is really priced it high.
    Pros :
    – Only Advantage is no need to carry multiple lens during travel, its just a replacement of Kit lens.
    – Good Build Quality.
    Cons :
    – Don’t expect good quality or sharp images from this lens. (I am still using Nikon 55-300mm f3.5-f5.6. On a same body I get much sharper images with 55-300mm and I spent only 20K for that).
    – My experience is at 300mm/F6.3 image sharpness drops.
    – At 200mm, I am still at f6.3 and if you want to shoot at f5.6, you get only 105mm range.
    – Just for 300mm range choosing this lens was my bad decision, as well you can choose, 18-200mm/f5.6, may be better.
    – For landscape photography, its better quality than the kit lens, but my expectation was little higher for the current price, I was expecting at least similar to my Nikon 55-300mm.

I ordered this lens for my Nikon D3100 of very old vintage. The lens has been delivered safely in a nice sturdy package. So far I have liked the performance of the product as results have been good.

Every photographer’s dream lens achieves all possible focal lengths and is simultaneously infinitely sharp with no aberrations at all of them. Of course, neither is possible, even individually, and, worse, the trade-off between the two is unforgiving. So, the reviews for a lens like this, which claims to be close to achieving the former, are all over the map, depending on the user’s priorities. Beginners love it for its range and aren’t overly concerned with its image quality, while professionals (and professional-wannabes) hate it for its less than sharp images and are accustomed to having to carry multiple lenses as a result.

So, in anticipation of an upcoming trip to an exotic location, I thought I’d give this lens a try and see if it could replace two or three of my current lenses, so I wouldn’t have to change lenses on my Nikon d7500.

Oh, and I suppose that I should mention that I’m a physicist, specializing in optics, and have taught a semester course on optics more than twenty times. So, I bring some helpful skills to the issue.

First, the professionals are right to avoid this lens if they plan to significantly enlarge their photographs. But, with commonly available inexpensive and easy-to-use software, it’s possible to correct for most of the problems of this lens, allowing it to yield printable pictures up to about 16” x 24” with more than sufficient resolution. I’ve actually done this with my Nikon 18-140mm and 55-300mm lenses with excellent results. So, unless professional-wannabes are displaying their photographs on 65” 4K displays, their photographic snobbishness should probably be ignored. Indeed, I’ve known several such folks, who own a dozen or more high-quality prime (non-zoom) lenses each, but whose equipment is too heavy and bulky to carry with them. Worse, they’ve spent all their money on these expensive lenses and so can’t afford to pay an assistant to carry them all for them or even travel to places worth photographing in the first place. One of them has never actually taken a photograph.

So, ultrazooms are not really as bad as some snobs make them out to be.

Okay, so what about this lens? Well, it has another much less forgivable problem. A homework problem I assign to my class is to find a simple formula relating the angular view of a lens to its focal length and the camera’s sensor size. Using it, I made some measurements and found that this lens’s maximum focal length is NOT 300mm and instead is only approximately 240mm! In other words, its range is significantly less than claimed! And it’s also much less than Nikon’s own alternative 55-300mm telephoto zoom, which, interestingly, achieves approximately 330mm according to my measurements. So, Nikon’s marketing department is exaggerating the range of this lens (others have observed and commented on this problem, also, but less quantitatively). This value is unlikely to vary between individual lenses, so save your money, unless you’re happy with an 18-240mm lens, which is what this lens actually is. By the way, for Nikon APS-C cameras, in terms of full-frame language, this lens only corresponds to 27-360mm, not 27-450mm, as would implied be implied by its 18-300mm claimed range.

Now, I should also mention that photographs taken using the iPhone 14 are easily as good as those taken by my Nikon d7500 with this lens for the iPhone’s focal length range of 13 to 77mm (in full-frame terms), so the wide-angle portion of the photographic spectrum is covered well, even in low-light conditions, by the iPhone 14, which has many additional clever photographic advantages. And, as the less expensive Nikon 55-300mm zoom corresponds to about 80-500mm (full-frame), the combination of it and the iPhone covers more than the range of the so-called 18-300mm lens on both sides.

So there you have it, a single zoom lens—the Nikon 55-300mm lens—covers the entire desired range of telephoto focal lengths, eliminating the need to change lenses, as long as the iPhone 14 is along for the ride, too.

Finally, I also considered the much heavier Nikon 28-300 zoom but stopped short of buying it because reviewers of it also noted its less-than-claimed zoom range at the telephoto end. And I also considered the even heavier Tamron 18-400mm zoom lens, which has similar issues, but is even worse; see my review of it if you like.

So that was a week of my life wasted due to unscrupulous marketing tactics by these lens manufacturers.

I love to capture the best moments of travel and this is the lens that is always on my camera (Nikon D7100) ever since I bought it a year and a half ago.
Attaching a few photos from a single trip to illustrate: the Lake is taken from a moving vehicle at 1/4000s, the Tawang Monastery zoomed in at 140mm, the Rhino at 300mm from the back of an elephant, the Orchids an example of bokeh at 65mm.
I’ve also put in the last two images taken in low light conditions with the same lens, different trip: the painting of Vajrapani at 1/13s shutter speed and the Chaitya cave at 1/50s shutter speed. All photos hand held.
Easily the best lens to carry for travel.

I received the product today and tested with two different Nikon SLR D7000 cameras. The picture taken with the lens is like this with both the cameras. It is blur and not sharp at all whether zoom or close range. I found the packing of the product is not save that there may be defect on the way also, I don’t know. I want to return and refund, but there is no option for refund but only replacement. I will return it for replacement and lets hope the perfect product with perfect result arrives.

Today (30.8.2018) I received the replacement item again. This time the product is perfect with my Nikon SLR D7000. The packing is also found to be a safe one. Thanks for the smooth replacement policy.

Though I was initially a little hesitant, I am glad I made this investment and the results are very satisfying with my D 3300. The clarity at full zoom, bokeh and time taken to focus is incredible. The best part has to be that this will all your other lens useless…. phew! & no more of that heavy bag around!
