    Summary
For the most part, I am pleased with this little scanner. The photos scan well and I’m very impressed with the resolution. The biggest problem that I’ve had with it is in cleaning the inside lens — you have to work at it a little bit to not leave dust behind.

    Details
I received the scanner today and have tried it out for the past few hours. I’ve read everything I could get my hands on about the scanner, which was basically nothing but the manual and Magnasonic’s how-to videos since it is so new. I bought it without reviews because Magnasonic’s other scanners were well reviewed and I wanted the 5″ screen.

It took me around 20 minutes to wrap my mind around the menus, but once I did, it was easy to use. Do take the time to review the few short Magnasonic how-to videos on Youtube — that’s a lot shorter than reading the manual.

My biggest question prior to receiving the scanner was how quickly could I scan slides. The answer is it depends on two things: the quality of the slides and how much you want to fiddle with colours for each slide. I had around 20 slides which were stapled together rather than the regular glue. These did not slide through the slide adapter because they were too thick, hence I had to open the adapter for each slide. The adapters do not open easily, which is good when you’re pushing slides through but bad when you have to open them for each slide. For these slides, it took _lot_ longer to scan them. The colour adjustments were very handy for some slides and you could easily spend a lot of time adjusting each one. However, if you’re not going to adjust the colours for each slide and the slides are in good condition, you can push through three per minute!

Do expect to do some post-processing afterward. The rotate control only rotates by 180°, not 90°, so after scanning the slides you will need to still rotate many of them. The 135 slide formats did not need border cropping afterwards whereas the 126 slide formats did. I did not have 110 slides. Even with the colour adjustments, I still put them through some automated photo processing to adjust the colours more.

I was most impressed with the resolution. I was able to crop a photo to a quarter of the original size and have it still appear good. Take a look at the cropped photo that I have attached to this review.

The 5″ display is very handy — my last slide scanner had a 1.5″ display. If that’s still not big enough for you, you can hook it up to a television instead. I was concerned that the television was only used for the gallery (playback) mode, but it can be used at all steps of the process.

I scanned from 35 format film and super 8 videos (stills only) as well, and they all scanned well as required.

In terms of purchasing an SD card, you don’t have to spend the money on a high capacity one. While it will accept a 128 GB card, that’s overkill. I bought a 32 GB highly rated name-brand card on Amazon for $15 CDN. The average photo file size is 1.5 MB, so a 32 GB card will hold over 21,000 photos.

There were a couple of downsides.
    – The USB cord is short. However, it’s a standard mini-usb cord so could easily be replaced with a longer one.
    – The scanner does not know the current date. Hence, the photos were all dated 2017. This wasn’t a concern to me because after my post-processing the newly saved photos have the current date.
    – The biggest challenge that I had was in cleaning the lens. The brush fits into the lens area well, but I had difficulty getting all of the dust out. Still, it’s a lot better than my last scanner which had sections which could not be reached for cleaning.

I have only tried it on old 35mm negatives some 20 years old. It works fine. I go through a pack at a time selecting and saving those that I want to transfer. Transferring to my pc is easy (Windows 10). You can then send them by Facebook or WhatsApp to surprised individuals.
