I love Epson products because they continue to upgrade their software to account for operating system changes. Many printer and scanner manufacturers seem to move on from the model that you purchased and leave you hanging out to dry. The most important thing to do BEFORE you install (especially if you are using a 3rd party firewall product – mine is AVG), it to turn it off before you run the software install. I did not do this and AVG didn’t give me any warning messages, it simply blocked the scanner software from checking the internet for firmware updates and from installation. Once I turned off AVG, the process went smoothly and I was scanning in no time. The scanner is QUIET and the Scanner Pro 2 software is easy to use from the Windows tray with a right-click.

I bought this to use during tax season. Yesterday was my first full day of client appointments and it literally jammed when I attempted to scan docs during each appointment! Incredibly frustrating. I called Epson today and they told me I would need to use “slow mode” in order to scan multiple pages of varying sizes… totally useless. Why did I spend $700+ for a fast scanner that can only be used in slow mode? This item is going back today. Do not buy this unless you’re planning to scan docs that are exactly the same size.

I had the predecessor to this scanner for years and it served faithfully. I scan and shred ALL paper in my home office and these scanners just chug right along. Biggest problem is they can scan faster than Adobe Acrobat can digest. Biting the $650 bullet to step up to this speed demon was well worth the price. Drop a stack of paper in, hit the button, and stand back – but not too far. The only problem with this scanner is if you are scanning a large stack and a paper gets in the way of ejecting scans – which can happen with paper that is folded or wrinkled – the scanner will detect a jam and stop. I make a habit of removing every 10 or so pages (about every 10 seconds) from the paper catcher so this will not happen. And remember – 10 pages in about 10 seconds is scanning BOTH sides at once so you are scanning 20 pages of content! This is the sports car of scanners with a price to match – and worth it if you do a lot of scanning or hate to spend any time at all scanning.

I am in love with these awesome scanners. Everything I receive I put into dropbox, because these days, you never know where you will physically be when you need it. And, I am so glad to be done with file cabinets. They always take a long time and then if I or someone else returns the paper or folder to the wrong place its a nightmare. These scanners, along with appropriate cloud storage, pay for themselves in lost productivity in my opinion.
There are three things I like most about the Epson DS-770.
1) Speed. You probably don’t need it to be any faster.
2) Small footprint. When folded, its very compact.
3) Ability to scan directly to Google Drive or Dropbox. An essential these days. Don’t scan stuff and just store it locally, you’ll be in trouble.
Things I don’t like:
1) The fact that you have to buy a $280 network module to make it stand alone.Â
Epson Network Interface Unit – Document Scanner Accessory (B12B808441)
Seriously, I can’t understand how a $700 scanner can’t have a wifi chip in it, when dozens of cheap flatbed printers do. (OK, I *do* understand but I think its something they should have baked into it)
2) It doesn’t scan photos. This is a purebred document scanner! So its not really meant to scan photos, but, you know, in this price range…
Things I don’t use at all:
OCR software. Almost all these scanners offer it.

Less noise and good speed..

This Scanner doesn’t work properly on Windows 11. It always stops working. More often, reinstallation of software is required. Not at all recommended for purchase

The Epson DS-770 seems like a well-built machine. It scans fine if you don’t care about options.
The scanner was well packaged. It came with power and USB cables and two instruction sheets in English/French and Spanish/Portuguese. The instructions promised to be so simple with a few pictures and few instructions. That did not turn out to be the case.
The packaging left me with an impression that Epson cares about their product. For example the safety tape that holds parts of the panels in place had the ends bent over to make removal easy. I haven’t seen that in years. A nice extra, thank you. I was surprised that the unit was so small. When folded into “compact mode” it measures 11-1/2″ across the front, 6″ deep and 7″ high. With lid open and ready to scan it measures 11-1/2″ x 16″ deep (with paper catch tray pulled forward) x 13″ high. Precision-made rigid plastic parts remind me of the computer equipment of decades ago. Plastic parts won’t crack off this thing over time. There is a strange mechanism where the back folds out when the top folds up. It reminds me of high-end cameras from the 50’s, but it seems unnecessary. This probably allows it to be as compact as it is.
The software installation is the nightmare. As always, you no longer get a CD install disc, you must go to the Epson website and download the package of software and drivers. I am using a 3-year old computer with a fresh Windows 10 install from the recovery partition on a wiped hard drive. You can’t get more virgin than this. Standard Windows security software.
Software downloaded flawlessly. Windows did a security scan. The paper instructions say to run the downloaded software before hooking up the USB and power cables. Only when instructed, plug in the cables and turn the scanner on, which I obediently did. The software recognized the scanner and went to the Internet to check for firmware. It got stuck here for an hour. All buttons were grayed so I couldn’t bypass this step. I had to stop the install with Task Manager. It was late on Saturday and I thought maybe the Epson website was having difficulties with no employees around. After noon on the next day was the SAME PROBLEM. And this is the kicker: freshmen in a programming class are taught to never let programs hang. I haven’t seen such a problem since the 90’s. Now, software will come back within two minutes stating a problem like “could not download firmware, try later” or “error code: 1234” and then continue or end gracefully. This is so serious that I think some employee should be fired at Epson over this. Still, the drivers and scanning software seem to be installed OK. But I don’t know if all the software was installed.
We run Linux on many computers and Epson does have a Linux driver on their website for the DS-770, though I have not tried to install them. Since the DS-770 is not network-ready, we will use this scanner on a stand-alone Windows PC. BTW, There is no networking without a special external box made by Epson that costs between $280 – $365. This would only provide a wired connection; wireless is impossible. For half the price of this scanner, my Brother is an All-in-One that came with the ability to scan to network via wired or wireless connection. But it can’t handle the volume of the Epson DS-770.
The software is pretty vanilla with no software to edit PDFs. In contrast my Visioneer scanner came with a simplified version of PaperPort to edit PDF documents to page level and the ability to combine sets of PDFs into a single large PDF. But in tests the DS-770 worked fine with no misfeeds or skipped pages. There were more slightly skewed pages than with other multi-page scanners I have used. Operation was smooth and fast for up to 100 pages. I was able to scan more than the stated 100-page limit as long as they fit into the feeder.
Aside from the serious software install problem and lack of even simple PDF editing software, this is a well-built machine.
