I tried a few mesh options but none worked seamlessly without drop-offs. These absolutely do the job but if you’re in an old house with thicker walls, you really need to over-do the number of satellites. We’ve three over 340sq m and there’s a real need for a fourth. They’re easy to set up and the app is really clear to use. There can be some rogue choices by other kit – one of our Ring cameras which is literally two metres from a satellite often randomly switches to another one much further away and hammers its own signal in the process. If there were a way to force kit to use a certain satellite, it would be perfect but otherwise it’s as close as you can get with a mesh setup.

I live in a mid-1930s semi-detached house, the like of which can be found the length and breadth of the UK. It is under 2,000 sq ft but has solid brick internal walls, which dampen the coverage of most routers. For the past 5 years I have had a cheap Tenda MW6, 3 unit, mesh system that has worked well. Three years ago, I tried to upgrade to an ASUS AC3000 but had to return it because it could not cover even adjacent rooms. Having upgraded to full fibre, I again decided to replace the Tenda and opted for an Orbi AX5400, 3 pack.
I placed the Orbi units in exactly the same positions as the Tenda units had been, all of which had linked quickly and well without the need for an app (which I wouldn’t have downloaded in any case because it is Chinese and subject to PRC ‘privacy’ laws). Initially, I couldn’t get the units to link together and had to phone the Orbi helpline, which advised me to reinstall the app and start again. Eventually, I did get the units to link but they only provided half the download speed of the Tenda mesh, were more unstable, and it took much longer to re-establish connection when a link between units was lost. After eight days I asked for a refund and returned the Orbi. I am now back with the Tenda MW6.
