The ACER ASPIRE 5 14 is a fantastic laptop! This review is for the version – Intel 13th Gen i5 1335U/16 GB RAM/4GB DDR6 NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2050 (with the integrated Intel IRIS Xe Graphics)
Note that the pics on Amazon are of the 15.6 model, not the 14 inch version (I have indicated this to Amazon for correction). You may check the acer india web site for accurate photos.
Got the unit from Acer Online (India) directly. The gift packing was very impressive (please see photos) and delivered by Bluedart within 3 days!
16GB RAM (2×8 GB) is recommended for optimal dual-channel performance (you can find online reviews heavily recommending dual-channel RAM setups)
The Laptop weighs just 1.57 kgs and the build quality is SOLID. It ships with a 50Wh Li-ion batter and a 90.1w charger
The laptop base is sturdy and the lid can be opened with one finger! It looks like a sleek business laptop 😊
The 1920×1200 60Hz IPS panel is gorgeous, with a wide viewing angle. The IPS display has MATT finish, so no shadows! I’m not so keen on a higher display refresh rate, so 60 Hz looks good to me. **This laptop sports a display panel with 16:10 aspect ratio, and not the usual 16:9 !**
Even though I got the laptop for generic use (not for gaming), I ran *Asphalt 8* for an hour to see how it fared (the game is a free download from Microsoft Apps Store). The gameplay was PERFECT using MAX settings. During gaming, the laptop warmed up quite a bit, with medium fan noise (headphones solve the problem). The thermals could have been improved a bit since the air vents are pointed to the display panel while the laptop lid is open.
For generic web browsing/video playback, the laptop does not heat up at all, and the fan noise is almost NIL. The battery lasts for around 5 hours (I not tried gaming while on battery though). The full battery charges within 90 minutes. **In the Nvidia control panel, the preferred graphics processor is set to *auto-select* mode by default (this can also be switched between RTX 2050 or Iris Xe). I have retained this setting all along**
The laptop speaker volume is LOW with (non-existent bass!) , but okay for audio/video playback (an external speaker/headphone is suggested). The laptop comes with WiFi 6E and 1080p 60 FPS HD camera with Temporal Noise Reduction. The Bluetooth is 5.2 version as per acer website and connection to speakers/headphones is super-quick!
The keypad has a white backlight with 2-level brightness control that can also be turned off via an Fn key (the backlight color is not customizable). The unit color is steel gray. The gray keys with white letters is a bit hard to read, acer should have used a darker keypad with white letters for easy visibility.
The laptop ships with PCIe NVMe Gen4 512 GB SSD, but nowhere on Acer/Amazon have I seen the max SSD capacity supported by this unit, but two Acer stores in Bengaluru confirmed that the unit comes with 2 SSD slots that can be upgraded to 2 TB (The Insyde BIOS indicates something similar as well). Acer folks also say that I can open up the laptop for SSD/RAM upgrades (without voiding the warranty) but should keep a valid bill as proof. One of the screws at the back of the unit has an acer warranty sticker, and I’m having second thoughts on dismantling the unit! The RAM can be upgraded to 32 GB though.
To sum up, this is a well-designed, super-fast machine! I had plans for the i7 version of this laptop, but that it was not justifying the performance and pricing in comparison to the i5. Most importantly, I would suggest visiting an acer store first to check on the unit before proceeding to buy, since the screen is only 14 inches (some may feel that the display is a bit small when compared to the usual 15.6 inch/16:9 units). Please do a bit of research, and you will be glad later that you did! All the best!
