Best bang for the buck.. i use this to store all my personal data and family photo archives… speed is pretty good over my network, nothing to complain about… Only thing which i miss sorely is a on/off button. But then again i implemented an IOT switch with sonoff and use that to remotely switch on when i need to get it back online post shutdown.
Aug 2020 update :- still works like a charm , I have it on a schedule to power on and off ( part of the software ) , speed on LaN is awesome , use in built plex and stream onto multiple devices at home simultaneously , no performance drops. Love this device for its zero maintenance and ease of use

The device is for both home as well as business use. If you are into editing & studio or a software professional the device will work great for you. I run a SME so i ordered this for my production unit, we have a lot of data and day by day the computer storage is getting upto its neck and we need those data at any point of time. This NAS device has been plugged to our Router and you can create users and assign them storage so at any point of time you can access your personal and public data within the network via LAN. Also WD my cloud has cloud connectivity so you can access those data even from a remote location if the NAS device is on. Its working great for me and my company and i would recommend this to every user who have lots and lots of data.

Perfect NAS for storing backups. I bought this to explore the idea of local backups but using it made me realize how useful cloud storage providers can be. There are a lot of advantages to this product – reliability is relatively high for storage, network performance is good and the firmware is opensource with a very large community for customized software.
Unfortunately, there are a few disadvantages. Namely there is no hardware transcoding because of low RAM and CPU numbers, which means you can’t play anything from the NAS itself. You need to download it locally and use it. This means no streaming or Plex media services. This itself relegates this product just as a long-term storage backup. Additionally, I hate to say it but WD’s application for viewing photos and videos from the NAS is horrible. Maybe we’ve been spoiled by the Photos app on iPhones or the Google Photos app on Android phones but the application has severe limitations and performance issues.
That said, it’s an excellent backup at home to store files that you can access from anywhere. If you install a tunnelling or VPN service like ZeroTier you’ll be able to access the NAS from anywhere in the world relatively safely without working out any ports on your router. But the poor hardware performance means that the only operations this NAS can do is moving files to and from local/network devices.

I did a year long research and had also tried those cheap docks. Lost my data using cheap products and finally decided to use this.
There are loads of online reviews of this product. In short, my reason to choose it.
– low price
– I had hard drives already
– more stable (configure and forget) than synology
– super silent compared to competitors
– EXT file system for RAID (can be read independently on PC in case I need to)
2020 Update: Still working as intended. I’ve literary not touched or had to tinker with anything in past years.
2023 Update: Still working like new! It stays on 24×7.
2024 Update: Needed more storage than 2 bays. Switched to Synology DS923+ — what an irony considering my original review (now I have a need to run VMs which I didn’t earlier.) This unit is still operational as a backup of the Synology NAS. Fan noise has increased quite a bit.

I like the product very much, had bad experience previously with this product as i got open box and defective ptoduct..
But this is bang got great one at less price, i got this at 12K+ which was great deal for me.. am using this with seagate 3.5 inch sata hdd not NAS and i on raid with single bay its runs like beast… great product..
Some of things to keep in mind before buying, this is non US model its Malaysia model, the write and read speed all depends on what internet speed you got, dnt expect 100MBS with 30MBS internet..it makes but noise while written or reading data.. you have get MyCloud OS 5 app to access file outside network and on mobile phones… i use it on ipad, laptop and mobiles…all works like smooth butter…
Overall i got the setup for less than 16k.. wd nas and seagate sata hdd.. it was great buy for me..
If you have loads of data and want to setup your own NAS yes definitely go for it..i use it for back up my all wildlife photos, if your are wildlife photographer and do alot of storing, yes its great buy.. its support all RAW photos and you can view RAW photos on MyCloud app without any other supporting software.. i suggest to buy diskstation and buy storage separately if yoh looking into budget kind of thing, if you ok with spending more money go for package with NAS hdd..
Overall it was happy buying for me..

last review was not posted, hopefully this one pass amazon review.
Totally waste of money. It stopped working after 1 year. and the customer support is pathetic. All of my users i created is showing offline from web or over WD’s app. Only Admin account is working. When contacted customer support they reply after a week with web links and when i tried and replied that its not working, they are replying that i am using Seagate Disk so its not working. I dont understand if issue is with Drive of other company, how it was working from a year and why Admin account is working and only other users accounts are affected. i am trying to get call back from them or support through screen sharing so that i can show the issue but not getting proper response.
My final conclusion is its totally garbage, app was already pathetic now i can use this device. My backups are stucked and cant copy it. I wasted my 40K over this pathetic device.
