Given the low price, I really wasn’t expecting much from this. Having used USB capture devices in the past, they are either very expensive (in the £400 – £500 range); or they’re cheap but they give low quality output. I’m very happy to say that this little dongle has exceeded my expectations entirely.
The process of capturing from HDMI was really simple – pretty much plug and play. I connected my HDMI cable to the dongle and plugged it into my macbook. Then I opened Quicktime and selected “New Movie Recording”. The output from the HDMI was then available as a ‘camera’ within Quicktime, and I hit record. Left it to play out the show, and that was it, job done. Couldn’t have been simpler at all.
The video was recorded and exported in 1080p quality, at 25fps. Audio and picture quality were perfect, and stayed in sync for the full hour I recorded. No variable frame rate, no dropped frames, no errors at all.
Given that this can output at full 1080p signal, I think it’s actually more impressive than similar bits of kit that I’ve used for work which cost a lot more money (some of which do a very similar thing but only support 720p output). I couldn’t comment on the reliability of this device over time as I’ve only used it once or twice – but given the low price point, the ease of use and the high quality of the output, I couldn’t give this anything less than five stars.
