Didn’t realize when I bought it but after some googling it seems to be standard. The hdmi out won’t actually output any signals unless the card has power, and this particular card requires the usb for power. Also the hdmi plugs are a bit tight but no noticeable damage so far so not a real issue.
In hindsight I probably would have gotten a card that has a separate power plug so that I can still use my game systems without messing with the cables or connecting my computer to it.
The lower rating is for the lack of a separate power plug, otherwise everything else works great, resolution, delay, ease of use, form factor, durability, socket connectivity.

For all of my STREAMERS/ YOUTUBERS, do not buy this product bro. I never write reviews, but I’m gonna tell you what I wish I saw before I bought this thing. I thought that I could get away with buying a less expensive capture card. Well, there’s a reason why everyone thinks of one brand when it comes to capture cards. I connected my Xbox one to my pc, and I tried to record some COD Zombies for my YT channel. Everything connected easily, no problem there. However, the footage of the gameplay was coming through like I connected a GameCube or something! Crazy lag, no detail or definition, I wish I would’ve recorded some gameplay just to show the level of disappointment I experienced. Make the serious investment and go with “The Cat”

Per the reviews I took a chance on this VCC. It came with a USB cable and an instruction card written in Chinese. No worries, it’s not rocket science to connect the in/out HDMI and the USB. I got this for my son so he could play a PS4 thru his 17″ laptop display in his dorm room. So, I tested it out using a Wii U. The VCC passed the audio and video thru to the TV just fine via the HDMI in/out. But he won’t have a TV. Using OBS Studio on my laptop I configured the following settings. Select “Source” as Video Capture Device. In the Video Capture Device properties window, set Device property to “USB 3.0 HD Video Capture”. Scroll down and check the box for “User custom audio device”, the Audio Device setting is now displayed right below the check box. Set the Audio Device property to “Microphone (USB 3.0 HD Audio Capture)”. If you want the audio to play on the laptop, set the Audio Output Mode property to one of the “Output desktop…” settings. The only other setting I set was the Resolution property to “1280×720” (because it’s a Wii U). See pic enclosed of TV image, Wii U gamepad right below the TV, then my laptop view right below that. Seems to work as advertised.
FYI, the HDMI in/out pass thru only works if the USB is plugged into a 5 Volt DC source, such as a PC USB or a standalone USB port to a wall plug. So don’t be surprised, because it makes sense that it’s not going to get the 5 Volts from the HDMI.

Using this to capture from an old VHS recorder with an AVI -> HDMI converter between the player and this box. Works perfectly well. My software sees this as a webcam rather than a device, but I really don’t care one way or another. Very pleased for price/performance and ease of use. No drivers needed for Win10.

you can’t customize it like an el gato, but you plug it in and everything works, smooth picture, reliable audio, can’t beat it for the price
