The 2010 27″ iMac has a hard drive with a built in temperature sensor and there is a cable running from the hard drive to a socket to the logic board that monitors the temperature. If you swap out the hard drive for an SSD and don’t replace that cable, the fans will run at maximum. There is a third party combination temp sensor cable + SATA adapter available that will correct this problem, but it’s very expensive and it’s also completely unnecessary. A much better solution is just to use this 922-9229 593-1149 optical drive temp sensor instead. It plugs into the HDD temp sensor socket and works just fine, keeping the fans running at the correct speed. No need for an extra SATA adapter either. In the picture you can see my SSD (in a bracket) installed, with this optical drive temp sensor attached to it. In the screengrab you can see the drive temperature is displayed properly in a temp monitoring application.
