So I have been looking for a monitor with True HDR capabilities and finally found the perfect one. Behold the Samsung 32 Odyssey Neo (4K, 165 Hz).

This is the one of the best HDR monitors in the LCD (VA panel) technology having Full array local dimming with 1196 local dimming zones. I have an OLED TV (LG C9) and also own 4K and 2K LG (Ultragear) monitors. So I can easily identify and compare HDR performance.

Don’t believe in Display 400 or 600 HDR certifications from other monitor brands. They mostly use edge lit dimming or have fewer localdimming zones (typically less than10 to 100)

This model has as the hardware to experience true HDR (1196 dimming zones). Blacks are True blacks and can reach up to 1200 nits of birghtness. Your entire viewing experience will be elevated to another level, even for SDR content if you use this monitor.

Only OLED panels can outdo the HDR performance this monitor offers, however OLED monitors have their own set of problems (burn-in) for PC applications (static content).

I own a RTX 4090 to drive the frames this monitor requires for Gaming. Viewing and gaming at 4K 165 HZ in HDR is truly the definitive experience to consume media.

G8 Neo has scanline issues, however this monitor has no such problems (due to lower refresh rates).

1000R curve is agressive and will take some time to getting used to. This montior is only for gaming and media consumption. You will be disappointed if you expect to do productivity tasks.

Overall a great buy for Gaming and media consumption.

Great Monitor I have ever used. My model is odyssey G7 32 inch WQHD 240 hz.
In one word big and beautiful.
    1) I also have Acer Predator 27 inch WQHD 144hz IPS monitor which is great for color production,
For a VA pannel I thought it will not be so colorful and backlit bleed will be more. but I totally
surprised for the model I have got . It competes Neck to neck with premium IPS pannel in color
reproduction and backlit bleed not present at all.
    2) With WQHD 240 hz, it is the fastest fluid monitor I have ever used. 2ms response time WOW , I play
Valorant regularly and this runs amazing.
    3) I attach it with my ASUS ROG Strix G17 with RTX 3060 and R9 5900HX and getting 260 fps in fhd
    setting in valorant.
    4) It comes with DP to DP cable which is useful when I connect it with my Desktop. As I stay far from my
home for work , I have to use my laptop so this cable didnt worked for me and I have to purchase a
USB C to DP cable seperately for 240 hz to work.
    5) It also does not come with HDMI cable which is a bummer, I also purchased it seperately althogh HDMI
    gives only 144hz refresh rate.
    6) The HDMI port is 2.0 not 2.1 in the monitor.
    7) No speaker present, I have to use my headphone, During gameplay its ok but during watching movie
its annoying. I am using Galaxy buds pro.
    8) It also have 3.5mm headphone jack but sound output is inferior than ROG Strix laptop.
    9) RGB lighting is ok , but front is hardly visible and back is ok. You can change it to static to rainbow to
    flash.
    10) Stand is very good sturdy and can move the monitor in any direction. Hinge is so perfect. Wall mount
    also possible, accessories are given.

Overall great monitor for gaming and watching movies but 1000R curve is polarizing, I feel good with the curve. Its depends upon personal preferences. Got it in 45999 INR which is bonkus
Thanks to Amazon and Appario Retail for delivering this in proper time and in perfect condition.
Foot Note: what I totally missed to notice that The monitor G7 32 inch came in Amazon packing box. Not in the Samsung company sealed box, Now I am in doubt wheather its a refurbished/ repackaged one? Thogh its working good .Seller please respond.

    Pros:
    – Not an OLED so no burn-in anxiety. I was contemplating buying the Alienware aw3423dw instead. Having owned OLED TVs for some time, the fear of burn-in has made me so paranoid that I gave up the idea of Alienware which has garnered gleaming reviews otherwise; despite of its generous 3 year warranty covering the burn-in.
    – The 1196 zone FALD works like a charm in turn making both the HDR and SDR content look fantastic. Very little blooming, great peak brightness and great contrast for a non-OLED.
    – All games just look gorgeous. HDR games look jaw-dropping.
    – 32″ is a great size for gaming and everything else.
    – Was lucky enough to get a screen with surprisingly good uniformity.
    – Great input lag and insane refresh rate headroom with VRR & Adaptive Sync. Competitive games like CS:GO and Valorant are a delight.

    Cons:
    – A1000R curve! Really!? This probably is Samsung’s way of compensating for the abysmal viewing angles of its VA panel. There’s still some vignetting at the edges. This also rendered my (branded) monitor lamp obsolete, so now I have get a new curved unbranded lamp. Not the best form for productivity too as things look warped, I was so annoyed by this that I booked a return within an hour of setting up and then cancelled it after a day because of dearth of good non-OLED HDR monitors in India. I think I’ll get used to this over time, but really 1800R would’ve been just perfect. The only redeeming quality is that the games still look great with this curve.
    – Poor screen calibration out of the box. I have a colorimeter (you could also use ICC profile from rtings) to get accurate image out of it.
    – Quality control / build issues. Thankfully I got a pristine display on first delivery, the reviews are abound about effed up displays with dead / hung pixels etc. but for me, the back I/O panel is not secured into the body and it rattles. For a display costing $1000+, this is inexcusable.
    – The viewing angles are poor so you need to be seated dead center and of course you can’t sit any other way because of the effing curve.
    – The OSD panel takes some getting used to. I loved my old LG’s joystick, it made navigating the OSD breeze.
    – Couldn’t find the firmware. I tried to get the latest firmware from official Samsung website(s) to no avail. Found a direct link posted by someone on reddit which worked.
    – Weigh’s close to 8Kgs without stand – way too heavy for the VESA stand to bear it. Neither is the supplied stand good enough as it wobbles with the slightest touch and also takes up a lot of space on the desk.
    – The firmware has weird bugs. E.g. sRGB picture profile doesn’t have the option Adaptive Brightness that adjusts the screen’s brightness based on ambient light. Although, I found it was still tweaking the brightness and I couldn’t disable it. Being a programmer, I figured out the earlier picture profile’s setting was carried over to the next. So, I went back to custom, disabled the adaptive brightness and then enabled sRGB to fix it. There are such small weird bugs that I’m encountering daily and there’s still no official firmware on samsung’s page for odyssey neo g8.

Conclusion – Buy it only if you’re going to use it expressly for gaming.
