Pros: Fits in a Fractal Design Mesh XL and it works well with the Threadripper WX CPU. Originally purchased the Asus board, but the Asus shipped warped and defective, so here we are. It was an easy build, the CPU install makes you wish all CPU’s pins are on the board and not on the CPU. I had one bad stick of memory, but the board is capable of running on seven sticks as opposed to eight. Same is true of the Asus. I prefer the pin pointing up as opposed to pointing out as in the Asus, to each their own. The Asus probably is a nicer board and if you are willing to go through the buy and keep swapping until you get a board that works, but I chose not to go that route despite the absence of reviews for the Asrock. This is a video editing/rendering 3D animation build, cooled on air, so no plans to overclock. No interest in RGB blinky things. The biggest + for me is it fits in a Mesh XL without issue. The weight of the board and running cables is not an issue with the Asrock motherboard, unlike the Asus. The feature set varies between the Asrock and Asus, so choose as you will, but the Asrock works without issue. Cons: I would have preferred a few more four pin fan headers on the board. The software isn’t as sophisticated as the Asus, but it gets the job done. The fan control isn’t the greatest, but monitoring the temperatures works, so away we go. The PCI lanes are okay for me, but if you need all the slots, you probably are better off with the Asus. Overall Review: If you are DYIing yourself, it’s just an easier board to work with. It’s a motherboard, the CPU layout on the board is not the same on the wx boards as opposed to the threadripper x series. If you are planning on air, the cpu’s fans are pointing straight up not out the back. I watched several youtube review builds, and that was not obvious.

Pros: – Has everything on board – Solid BIOS – It works Cons: – Only thing I’m not crazy about is the IPMI remote functionality Overall Review: I’ve built a few rigs on this board now and love it. Coming from many TRX40 builds on the Creator, it’s a perfect step up. TONS of hardware capability and it’s all on-board. Thunderbolt, dual 10Gbps, lots of USB, and a bunch of PCIe. I’m a huge fan of the BIOS as it really finishes off the bridging of servers to workstations like this board does. The BIOS is more of a server-type BIOS than previous-gen workstation/consumer BIOSs. NEMIX ECC RAM works great (Samsung die), and has always been good to me. If I had to pick at one thing, I wish there was a 3rd m.2 slot but no big deal. It’s a $30 pcie-to-m.2 card purchase to get a 3rd in there. With the 1.0 version of this board, they couldn’t get remote control display functionality working over IPMI. They seem to have got that resolved, but I don’t like how it requires Windows seeing 2 displays (one you’ve got connected via discreet GPU and the onboard GPU) and you cannot make them duplicate in Windows. What this means is if you really want to remote control over IPMI, you’ll want to set the only display to the onboard GPU. If Windows could do “duplicate the displays” it would be perfect. I’ll be spinning up a few rigs on the Asus board here shortly and will review (including multi-m.2 RAID performance), but as usual, right out of the gate ASRock has supplied more on-board hardware than Asus (like Thunderbolt).
