Pros: A step up over the Ivy bridge E 3.8 GHz 4/8 core we had as our main windows server 2008 r2. while it didn’t change the number of hyper-v VM’s we run, they all respond much faster and there is far less input lag. Vt-d works just fine for us on the asrock C226WS+ and it seems to handle the dual adaptec 7805’s data access better. Throughput over the onboard+ addon quad-port intel NiC in 5x teamed setup went from 370MBps to 580MBps off the 8x kingston ssd raid 10 array. Cons: It doesn’t support dual-socket or higher motherboards.

Pros: Quad core with hyperthreading makes this comparable to i7 but cheaper. perfect if you aren’t planning to overclock Cons: The IGP is Intel’s HD P4600. This specific IGP is not recognized by the majority of programs for hardware acceleration of video encoding. I bought this CPU because i wanted a better value than an i7 as i wasn’t planning on overclocking, but wanted an IGP for Screen capturing software, and the occasional video transcoding. Overall Review: I don’t use the IGP for video, and after some more research, the cause of the fault is that when the IGP isn’t in use, it returns a state 07 or something instead of available. Other than the IGP everything works as advertized and I couldn’t be happier. If you aren’t planning to use the IGP and are looking for a Xeon, buy the E3 1241 V3 or the E3 1231 V3

Pros: Replaced my aging home server system with this CPU (MB/RAM/SSD/Graphics as well). Day and night performance difference. – Cheaper than comparable i7 series, E5 series – Provides similar performance compared to E1276 which is another 50$ more – Less heat (ony 84w) – Socket 1150/DDR3 reduces overall price compared to latest generation which require DDR4 – Rock solid performance – Every bit of intel virtualization flag enabled on this CPU (compared to desktop series) – 3.5GHZ out of box with no compelling need to overclock (at least for my purposes) – running fedora 22 non-stop for a week. – Kde Plasma 5.3 works smoothly Cons: None noted so far Overall Review: Have built so many computers in the past and this is by far the smoothest build I have ever experienced. Just assembled everything and started the computer. Installed Fedora 22, Couple of virtual machines, setup my samba shares, printers etc, within 45 minutes. Planning to add 3-4 more virtual machines to build a hadoop cluster Un-scientific comparison Old H/w – Intel Q6600/Asus A8N-SLI Motheboard, Samsung 830 SSD, 8GB RAM – Linux installation and provisioning – 30 – 60 minutes – PFSense & Untangle installation – 30 minutes – System boot – 3 minutes – Untangle startup – 6 minutes inside vm New HW – Xeon E3-1246, ASRock Z97 Fatality Pro MB, GSKill 16GB, Muskin Reactor 250 and EVGA Geforce 750 – Linux installation and provisioning – 5 minutes – PFSense & Untangle installation – 5 minutes – System boot – 30 seconds – Untangle startup – 20 seconds I can now have my startup from 0 to all the way under 2 minutes (previously it used take at least 10-12 minutes). All with just 1% of CPU consumption. 🙂
