Different Types of Printer Paper
Regular Matte Paper
The most common type of paper used to print documents is regular matte paper, which is suitable for the majority of basic print jobs.
This paper can be considered the traditional “copy paper” stated above. It features a smooth, matte texture that absorbs ink and dries rapidly, preventing blurring and smearing.
Glossy Paper
This is the shiny item. Glossy paper has a polymer covering that provides a smooth gloss and generates richer, more vibrant colours than ordinary paper.
This paper is ideal for producing high-quality, colourful images. However, it takes longer to dry than traditional paper, thus if not handled properly, smudges may form. To avoid this, print on glossy paper using a laser printer.
Bright White Paper
Bright white paper boasts a smooth surface and vivid white covering, unlike typical white paper.
It is a high-quality paper with an elegant appearance, making it ideal for documents including images that require a brilliant finish without a glossy shine.
Photo Paper
As the name indicates, photo paper is mostly used for printing photos or pictures.
Do you recall the last time you held a photo printed on photographic paper? If so, you might remember that the front and back of the paper had different textures and appearances. One side usually has a high-gloss lustre, while the other has a matte finish. Additionally, photo paper is typically thicker than other types of paper.
Heavyweight Paper
Cardstock, the most popular type of heavyweight paper, may be known to you because it is an often used paper term among print customers.
However, printing paper comes in a variety of weights, which influence its thickness. Consider paper weight to determine whether a sheet of paper is thin or thick.
Pro-Tip: When selecting heavyweight paper, ensure that it is compatible with your copier/printer and use the proper tray for that weight.
Inkjet Paper
Another type of printer paper is inkjet paper, which is intended for small desktop inkjet printers.

Various Printer Paper Features

Printer paper has three main characteristics: coating, brightness, and weight. What do these three properties represent in terms of printer paper? Let’s review them below:
Coating
A coating is a polymer or synthetic substance put to paper to increase its glossiness and brightness.If you’ve ever seen a sheet of paper that appears shiny, it’s most likely because it has been coated.
Brightness
Brightness refers to the degree of whiteness and brightness on a page. The brightness scale typically ranges from 0 to 100, with 80-100 being the sweet spot for quality prints.
The general rule is that the brighter the paper, the higher the quality and appearance of the overall print work.
Paper Weight
Paper weight refers to the thickness and weight of your printing paper. It is generally estimated using the weight of one ream of uncut paper (about 500 sheets).
Basis weight is expressed in pounds (lbs) or grammes per square metre (gsm).
Different types of paper have different weights. The most common paper weight is plain paper, which weighs 75 grammes (20 pounds). (identical to the copy paper mentioned in the first section). Cardstock is the most often used “thick” paper, weighing around 176 grammes or 65 pounds.
Understanding why paper is measured in grammes or pounds might be confusing, especially when you come across terms like bond, cover paper, or GSM.
