Buying an e-reader is a complicated decision with lot of factors to consider. I have been an e-reader user of a Kindle Voyage for last five years so I will cover first the reasons why I upgraded from Kindle Voyage:
1. Yellow Light: The Yellow light is a welcome addition to the screen. I do lot of my reading in the dark when the family is asleep, it may be only 30 minutes daily but when those add up on a daily basis it means lot of books in a year. The Yellow light is more comfortable to read in the dark which made me think about upgrading to Oasis. The reading in dark is far more comfortable as it was with Voyage.
2. Bigger Display size: The screen is bigger which means lesser page turns and it also means I can zoom in and still read more content on the screen
3. Screen Quality: Some reviewers have mentioned that there is a certain sharpness in Kindle Voyage’s display as compared to Oasis. I do not think so, I think both are at par. There is a certain yellowness in the Oasis display (even when you put the warmth to 0) while Voyage is more whitish or bright, I read more in the dark so Oasis is the preferred device
4. Physical Buttons: Although Voyage had the Touch Press buttons on its side, it did not respond that well, so I would end up tapping on the screen to turn pages. Somewhere it breaks the spell of the fictional world when you tap on the screen, the buttons gives me a feeling of un-interruption which is so very crucial for readers to enjoy their book.
5. Last reason / Experience: I have been an avid user of Kindle Voyage for around five years before the screen started to have a couple of lines in it which meant the display was giving up. Although I could have still used it, those lines proved a distraction too big to ignore, anyway, Kindle Voyage was a superb device and had served me well for a long time, it still works but not to its earlier level. These devices are about the experience and those lines were hampering it.
Let me break down why I think anybody should buy an e-reader in few sub-headings
1. Return on Investment: Some people consider the ROI (Return on Investment) as an important metric while doing an electronics purchase that involves a significant amount. Some people argue this applies for an e-reader as it is a niche product only to be used for reading. However, according to me e-reader does not fall into that category. Why? As an e-reader is charging you for the entire experience of reading which cannot be captured in numbers. If you take into consideration this calculation, a Kindle Oasis at a price of around 20-25K would imply reading of at least 100 books on it to justify its cost. If you are a voracious reader, a number of 100 can be crossed in few years, if not I think a number of 25-50 is also good enough given the experience this device gives to a reader.
2. Convenience: This device like any other e-reader will give you an unimaginable convenience. You are having a storage of your entire personal library in your Bag without adding any weight to it.
3. Environment Friendly: If you happen to read 50 books on this device you are saving so many trees. If every person does that then the number of trees that can be saved by doing it across the world is huge
Summary: I received a product which had some issue with the screen, however, thanks to Amazon I got a new device and the new one was perfect, so no complaints with Amazon customer service but do check your device within the replacement window to ensure you are not getting a faulty device. To summarize if you are looking for a top notch premium experience of an e-reader, then Oasis is the only choice. If the budget is a constraint then go for Paperwhite, if the Paperwhite is expensive for you, then go for the standard Kindle, but do definitely try an e-reader. Although it takes a bit of time in getting used to it, you will love it, one of my best gadgets purchase ever and Oasis has taken it up a notch.

Kindle oasis is a powerful device for book lovers, and it’s a premium device to hold. Being a top-notch ebook reader, this device is undoubtedly a masterpiece crafted by Amazon. Still, some issues make me wait for the next in line model from Amazon. Here is my detailed review of the Kindle Oasis, which I bought for Rs 17k during the prime days.
Best Parts:
1) Kindle Oasis is the top model kindle available as of now, and its build quality indeed reflects its standing. The model has an aluminium body with a matte glass screen. The screen is flush with the bezels (means the screen is at the same level as the edges, unlike the basic Kindle where the screen is slightly down the edges).
2) The Oasis boasts a 7 inches screen which translates into more text available to read on a single screen without bothering to change the page frequently. The text is crisp, dark and sharp due to its 300 PPI screen. It exactly gives you the feel of a book page and the liberty to change the font face and the size.
3) The screen is illuminated by 25 LED lights placed near the edges and not behind the screen, thus making it more eye-friendly. Since the light is not coming from behind the screen but from the sides, there is almost no problem in night reading compared to tablets or mobile phones.
4)The warm light gives a pleasant reading experience during the night. You can set the intensity of the warmness as per your requirement. It also has a dark mode, which helps during night and you will love it if you love the dark mode in the mobiles.
5) The best feature for me in the kindles are the physical buttons. While using the touch panel, you can accidentally touch the screen, and the page will turn. Oasis also allows you to disable the touch screen while reading, and you can enjoy your reading session by using the device’s physical buttons. That clicky sound while you use the physical buttons is a piece of music to the ears. I don’t know why Amazon stopped giving the physical switches in all devices and made it a premium feature only.
With the best parts discussed above, it won’t be an honest review if I don’t write the limitations with this device.
Limitations:
1) Lacking in Ergonomics: The device comes with a bulky edge on the right side containing the physical buttons, Amazon during the launch of the first Oasis, claimed that this uneven design would help hold the Kindle in a better way as the weight will shift towards the right. It may be true for the 6 inches Oasis that came earlier, but this is not true for the 7 inches current model. Even with the bulk, the device falls or rotates towards the left (images attached). You have to use some force with the thumb to hold the device in place. You have to keep your thumb in such a position to avoid pressing the physical buttons; this somehow takes out the ease of reading in this device.
2) Since the device is uneven from the back hence you cannot simply put it on a table or inclined holder for reading the ebook. (see the images attached).
3) Since the device powers 25 LEDs, the battery drains swiftly if you use the lights continuously along with the wifi. Reading with the LEDs off (0 brightness) and aeroplane mode might help but not more than a level. So the battery is a problem here for me.
4) In the warmth settings, you feel the brightness going down when you increase the warmth. Hence for warmth, you need more illumination, and that will drain your battery again. The automatic brightness function is overall good but not satisfactory enough. In the end, you will end up searching the proper warmth /brightness ratio and thus lose the time which you have managed for the book somehow.
5) I am using kindles since 2013, and I liked the basic Kindle for its proper size. It fits in your average trousers’ pocket (even with the cover). The Oasis is more of a square shape, and due to 7 inches screen and a wider bezel on the right, it won’t go in your pocket. This square shape also takes away the feel of a book and restricts more background light from falling into your eyes. Generally, while reading, it is good that you occasionally focus your eyes to a far vision so that the muscles are relaxed, but with Oasis, this becomes a little tough, and at night, it may cause some problems.
So with the above best features /limitations of this device, it is undoubtedly a device to go for ebook readers. It costs a considerable sum, but it gives you the pleasure of reading.
For me, Oasis is not my type of device, and I would like to continue using my basic Kindle for some more time until Amazon comes up with a new Design (maybe like Voyage but with actual physical buttons and warm light).
