I really wanted to love this. I’ve had it in my wish list for almost a year and I finally bought it. They market it as a product to allow you to get rid of your cloud subscriptions, but no way. The software is so bad and so clunky so it’s going back. I wanted it primarily for storing and accessing my phone pics and videos and my action cam pics. I was also going to have my wife in it as well to store her pics, so we could both get rid of our cloud subscriptions. Half of my pics show up as very low quality, or they’re sideways for some reason. None of the mp4 videos taken by my phone will play at all, it’s been a very frustrating experience to say the least.

Needs something with a small footprint but with enough HD space to store video/music and to provide backups in an apartments . The included 4TB of drive space gives you the additional 1 year warranty versus buying with no drives — for some not a real benefit, but in this case given that it is travelling with my daughter, it was a nice perk.
The configuration and setup was very easy — setup on my network here and moved files to it with ease. Supports many different connection mechanisms to place things not the device. Added Plex for the media serving portion of the applications required, and she’s ready to go. Will be configuring the device to also support laptop backups to ensure no assignments, files, etc. get lost.
Overall very quiet although you will hear the drives going when stroring information on the unit… didn’t notice it so much during retrieval.
Probably won’t use all the features of the unit as it was mostly for the media storage and serving aspects, but nice to know they are there.
Very happy with the purchase and ease of getting things running. Makes me consider WD for my next NAS update as I am currently on Synology. Have to see when the time comes.

I’ve always wanted to set up a NAS, but didn’t do it because of the price. It was on sale for $278, after reading all the positive reviews I grabbed it right away and am very happy with it.
Initial set up is very easy. Just follow their online instructions and you will get it running easily with their basic features. I use it mainly for remote file transfer/backup (mainly photos), and Plex. To set up Plex, if you are not an experienced user, it might take some trial and error to get it working properly (involved router port forwarding etc); but like everything else it is a learning process and I find it quite interesting, and rather satisfying when it works!
I read someone recommend cat6 or 7 cable to improve the performance. I’m using cat5 and am already happy with it, and will consider getting cat6 or 7 to see if there really is a difference.
There are many more features and add-ons that I can install. When I have time I’d love to explore them.
Overall if you are new to NAS I recommend it as it is easy to install and so far it is running good and quite reliable. Put it in your Wishlist, hopefully you will get a notification that it is on sale!

The device was received in good condition. However, the data transfer rate was extremely slow over the same home network . Called up WD support and they said WD sync software was end of life and should use goodsync. As soon as I installed goodsync it gave a message that free subscription was over and I needed to take a paid subscription. That was enough for me and I decided to return the device. Too much hastle and criminal to have to pay for a 3rd party software to use WD device. Had good experience in past with other WD product but this experience was bad. Have raised return request but due to Covid situation the return pickup has not happened and not received refund
