I read all the reviews and watched all the YouTube videos on the Sennheiser 600 series and nearly all of the “experts” dismiss the 660s2 and say the 650 or 600 are better, so I took their advice and bought some 650’s.
They were surely right – what a stunning set of headphones, sound amazing, so comfortable, well built…but I couldn’t stop thinking the 660s2’s looked a bit cooler and were developed much more recently, so must be good too. I caved in and bought some and within an hour the 650’s went on eBay.
Don’t get me wrong, the 650’s are an excellent headphone, but the 660s2’s beat them in every department imo. Not by much though at all, it’s very subtle differences. They feel slightly comfier, lighter and yes I think they look nicer. Sound wise, there’s more bass, slightly wider soundstage and a bit more detail, just a bit more pleasing all round to my ear.
Only downside is they’re twice the price of the 650 and no way they’re twice as good, so if you’re after a bargain go for the 650’s every day of the week

Vorab: Ohne Kopfhörerverstärker holt man nicht das aus diesem Kopfhörer raus, wozu er eigentlich in der Lage ist. Nämlich richtiger Highend Sound. Das liegt an den 300 Ohm Impedanz. D.h. der Kopfhörer ist ohne Kopfhörerverstärker eben sehr leise und entfaltet nicht sein ganzes Spektrum oder Kraft, was sich auch auf den Sound auswirkt. Ich habe auch die Airpods Max und dachte dieser Klang ist Spitze. Ja, … bis ich mir eben die 660S2 gekauft habe. Zuerst betrieben mit einem Fosi Röhrenverstärker. Ab da habe ich schon eigentlich gedacht: Tschüss Airpods Max. Ich nutze sie natürlich noch für Bluetooth Musik. Aber jetzt zum Eingemachten wie ich die Kopfhörer betreibe: Musik kommt vom iMAC (Apple Musik HiRes) über USB Kabel in einen externen DAC Wandler (D/A). Vom DAC Wandler über Cinch in den KopfhörerVerstärker. Dort über die 4,4mm Klinke am Kopfhörer. Zu den Kopfhörer habe dafür noch einmal ca. 500 Euro ausgegeben. Aber es lohnt sich. Sound: Absolut breite Bühne mit Top links/rechts Trennung. Glasklarer Sound, man hört einfach alles, was man vorher nicht gehört war. Bei ruhigen Stücken das Luftholen der Singers, oder das Zupfen der Gitarre, sogar wenn der Finger mal knackt. Man steht förmlich 1 Meter vor der Bühne. Man kann die Musik voll aufdrehen, keine Höhen die weh tun, kein Bass zuviel oder zuwenig. Der Tiefbass ist wahrnehmbar. Kein Gematsche im Sound. Alles feinsäuberlich getrennt. Mein Fazit: Mit den Airpods Max konnte ich vielleicht 2-3 Stunden Musik hören, dann mussten sich die Ohren erholen. Mit meiner Konfiguration höre ich zum Teil bis zu 7 Stunden Musik. Weil es jetzt richtig Spass macht und so angenehm ist. Alles meine persönliche Empfindungen, aber empfehlen kann ich diesen Kopfhörer zu 100%.

I use many wireless Bluetooth headphones from Bose and Sony. First time I’m trying to understand the Hi-Res headphones, definitely there is a noticeable difference when I listened first time with this Sennheiser HD660S2. But this needs an Amplifier/DAC, without amp/dac it’s not good, not portable like any other wireless headphones. I’m happy I bought this headphones, it’s amazing to listen some of the Hi-Res tracks.
